C ompared to tradi tional hydroelectri city which accounts for about 80% of the main grid according to World Bank data, Cameroon’s solar energy sector has received a boom, expanding national pho tovoltaic capacity toward 62 megawatts on its path toward a 250-megawatt yearly capacity target by 2030, as outlined in plans by the Ministry of Water and Energy. This expansion is mirrored directly by the mul tiplication of retail shops and energy operators. In Yaounde like in other cities, the market is no longer limited to high-end solar panels, it now caters to every budget. “A few years ago, there were only expensive large solar panels. So neither vendors nor buyers were in terested. But now the case is different, small portable solar lamps and emergency torches range between FCFA 1,500 to FCFA 5,000. Multi-bulb solar study and home kits retail between FCFA 10,000 and FCFA 35,000,” explains Antoine Ringyu, a retailer in Yaounde. The market uptake is equally attributed by sector stakehol ders to the pursuit of energy security as Lisette Claudia Tame Njambè, chief execu tive officer of Meta Energy emphasizes “While official urban grid coverage figures appear stable on paper, recur ring voltage fluctuations and sudden outages continue to disrupt commercial activities thereby indirectly impacting on the economy. My initiative introduces structured subscrip tion offers yielding between 4.9 kWh and 13.4 kWh daily, with entry fees from FCFA 249,900 and monthly plans at FCFA 24,900, targeting 400 clie...
