C ameroon loses more than USD 187 million, about FCFA 105.535 billion, in Gross Domestic Product every year due to micronutrient deficiencies, according to a joint report by the World Bank and the World Food Programme. The same report states that the country requires less than USD 11 million, approximately FCFA 6.207 billion annually, to scale up core national micro nutrient interventions. Experts say investing this small amount could save the country billions and improve public health. According to nutritionists, iron and vitamin A deficien cies are the most critical micronutrient challenges in Cameroon. The prevalence of zinc, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies is not as high. Speaking during a nutrition and iron fortification awareness session, Dr. Brehima Cissoko of Nestlé said the situation is alarming, especially among children and women. “62.5% of children under 5 years suffer from iron deficiency, while 39% of the same age group suf fer from vitamin A deficiency. Also, 40.6% of non-pregnant women suffer from iron defi ciency, and 18% of pregnant women suffer from vitamin A deficiency,” he disclosed.
