Agricultural Productivity: Farmers Exhorted To Embrace Technology

This was during the Digital Agriculture Forum organized by the National Agency for Communication Technologies which ended on August 14, 2026 in Limbe.

A gritech start-ups, fintechs, farmer organisations, cooperatives and government services in the sector of food production converged in Limbe, South West Region, from August 12 to 14, to examine ways of boosting productivity and agri­ cultural value chains in order to contribute to food security. This was during a forum that brought together 100 parti­ cipants from various farmer organisations, cooperatives, research and financial institu­ tions as well as 14 start-ups. The Director General of the National Agency for Communi­ cation Technologies (ANTIC), Prof Ebot Ebot Enaw, in his opening remarks underscored the importance of agriculture as the backbone of Cameroon’s economy, contributing about 16% to 18% to the country’s GDP and providing livelihood to millions of Cameroonians. Despite the enormous poten­ tial, Cameroon’s agricultural sector continues to face per­ sistent challenges like climate change, conflicts in production areas, inadequate infrastruc­ ture, limited access to finance, substantial post-harvest losses, among others. “These realities underscore the urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions,” Prof Ebot Ebot said. The Director General of ANTIC emphasized that “by leveraging digital technologies such as precision agriculture, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, digital advisory services, and smart supply chain manage­ ment, Cameroon can increase agricultural productivity, reduce food losses, improve market access, and strengthen national food security.” While noting that the future of agriculture is increasingly digi­ tal, Prof Ebot Ebot highlighted some of the technological in­ novations that have the po­ tential to transform farming practices in Cameroon. “Mo­ bile applications can provide farmers with timely weather fore...
