D uring enrolment every year, students from diverse backgrounds always flood the Uni versity of Buea. Usually, they are prone to limitations in having computing resources that are needed for the different highly demanding courses to meet their goals. With that, many tend to fail their courses then come for re-sit while others drop out. A University of Buea student, Timah Berry Naura Enyauh, has taken steps to ensure these set backs are removed. She built a private cloud deployment using OpenStack. It was a project she presented to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology on July 23, 2026, to earn a BSC in Computer Engineering and Technology. In an interview with Cameroon Business Today, she said the idea is for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology to host its own private computing resources so that students can request compute power on demand. When a student needs resources they don’t have to carry out an assignment, a lecturer or department administrator grants them permission, and a virtual machine is created for them. Once that permission is granted, the student can use it, on the same network as the cloud, for whatever their as signment requires: storage to save their work, compute power to run intensive programs and software, and networking to communicate with other virtual machines on their network. It is built using OpenStack, the standard open-source framework for this kind of infrastructure, and deployed on a minimalized footprint, which shows it can genuinely support computing and technology development without requiring anything en terprise-scale. “ I proved that first by simulating the whole system on a single laptop, 8 gigabytes of RAM, four cores, roughly 512 gigabytes of storage, running Ubuntu Server, and it worked.
