D ouala IV Council now has 5 new tricycles to improve household waste pre-collection. The equipment was handed over recently during a cere mony presided over by the Mayor of Douala IV, Profes sor Edouard Hervé Mbah. The materials are the result of cooperation between the decentralized local authority and the German development agency, GIZ. According to the council, Douala IV produces about 100 tons of household waste daily. Collecting all this waste has been difficult, especially in neighbourhoods with narrow streets where large garbage trucks cannot pass. The Head of Hygiene and Sanitation at the Council, Gilles Mousima, praised the donation, saying the tricycles will help collect a significant portion of daily waste. The tricycles will ea sily navigate narrow streets and reduce illegal dumping in the council area. The donation comes at a time when heaps of dirt have taken over some major streets in the council area, forcing vehicles and pedestrians to scramble for passage. Residents have often complained about late collection and overflowing bins.
