Smart Energy Monitoring System: To Enhance Electrical Reliability In Cameroon

During electricity fluctuations, the system turns off heavy devices and permits light devices to function.

A University of Buea student has found a solution in managing electrical loads whene ver there is voltage fluctuations. On July 10, 2026, Tajocha Gideon Asapnkia presented a smart energy monitoring and automatic load shedding system for low voltage installations while defending his Bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The system is like a replica of normal conventional energy meters within installations. It is incorporated with two main functions; monitors the electrical parameters consu med by electrical loads (bulbs, sockets, televisions, fridges, and air conditions etc), and sends every information which it records to smart devices (e.g., mobile phone, computers, etc). Given that the energy grid is actually unstable with voltage fluctuations and power imbalance, the system manages these loads by turning off some of the less essential loads (e.g., air conditioners, water heaters, etc) to ensure the most essential loads are being served by a qua lity power supply, thus avoiding equipment damages. The system classifies electrical loads in three main priority groups; priority one loads are the most es sential (e.g. lighting bulbs, internet, security cameras, etc.), Priority two loads are the semi-essential loads (e.g., televisions, fans, spea kers, etc.) and priority three loads are the non-essential loads (e.g., air conditioners, water heaters, fridges and all heavy electrical equipment). So, based on the conditions present (that is, the voltage and power level) at that moment, the system compares and manages what is available at the installation. It checks the available voltage and the power, the ratio of what is demanded to what is available. When the avai lable energy is not able to meet up with what is demanded, the system turns off (shed) priority three to permit priorities two and one loads...
