Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise: Technology To Boost Domestic Revenue

Digital adoption across agriculture, livestock, and agro-processing has emerged as the definitive strategy to diversify Africa’s revenue beyond crude oil, following the 6th Annual Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Economic Summit in Nigeria on August 20 2026.

M icro, Small and Medium Enter­ prises (MSMEs) account for over 90% of businesses, a significant share of employment, and a growing contribution to Gross Domestic Product according to data by the Africa Global Economic Forum. Despite their scale and importance, most MSMEs remain constrained by low productivity, limited access to finance, informality, weak integration into value chains, and restricted access to regional and global markets. Digitalizing these MSMEs to boost their revenue is moving to the top of the continent’s development agenda. At the recently concluded 6th Annual MSME & Start-ups Economic Summit held in Lagos on Au­ gust 20, business leaders and development economists de­ vised strategies aimed at shif­ ting national earnings toward tech-enabled production. Panel discussions focused on remo­ ving operational hurdles for informal enterprises using specific African innovations. In the agricultural sector, pay- as-you-go tractor services like “Hello Tractor” in Nigeria and Kenya allow smallholders to access mechanized farming tools on demand, while mo­ bile marketplaces such as “Freshbag” in Cameroon and “Farmerline” in Ghana connect farmers directly to real-time market data, cutting post-har­ vest losses and eliminating middleman margins. In lives­ tock management, veterinary platforms like “Cowtribe” in Ghana streamline biological supply chains for rural farmers, while real-time livestock tracking systems like “swiftVEE” in South Africa digitize herd sales and health monitoring, sharply redu­ cing animal mortality rates and standardizing product quality for commercial distribution.
