Northern Cameroon : Gov’t Riposte Plans To Electricity, Water Deficit

An inter-ministerial delegation led by Water and Energy Minister, Basile Atangana Kouna has conclude

Cameroon’s northern regions, which constitute part of the Sahel zone is on the brim of a social crisis following prolonged and constant scarcity of water and energy supply. The semi-arid Far North, North and Adamawa regions that constitute northern Cameroon are hit by the hazardous effects of climate change with little rainfall which has severe repercussions on agriculture, livestock breading and electricity supply. The Far North Region, for instance, recorded only 619mm of water in 2017 with 38 days of rainfall compared to 768mm and 42 days of rainfall in 2016

It is against this backdrop that the Head of State instructed an inspection visit by the inter-ministerial delegation led by the Minister of Water and Energy, Dr Basile Atangana Kouna.

The delegation held broad-based consultations with different stakeholders of the population notably parliamentarians, mayors and traditional rulers. Proposals made by the affected population are expected to be channelled to the hierarchy for short, medium and long term solutions to address the crisis. 

However, Minister Atangana Kouna announced certain preliminary measures that have been taken to address the disturbing energy deficit which has made life difficult in the area. He announced the construction of two solar power plants in Maroua and Garoua to supplement the existing energy supply.
