Timolol… : Homemade Eye-drop Serving Thousands

CBC Health Services aspires to produce 300,000 bottles/year and serve the entire CEMAC zone as well.
It is no news that many people suffer various eye problems in Cameroon. Some as a result of allergies and others caused by ignorance. It is common practice to see people buy roadside eye glasses without medical prescription and some go as far as using eye drops without consulting an ophthalmologist which is dangerous given that every eye problem has a cause and a way it should be handled. According to the General Manager of the Cameroon Baptist Convention Central Pharmacy, Ngah Edward Ndze, it is natural to have minute eye problems from the age of 40 and it does not change the fact that such patients have to put on sunshades prescribed by an ophthalmologist.  Taking advantage of the precarious eye ailment situation in the country, charlatans have opened ophthalmology centres across the country, making the already poor eyesight of naive patients worse. Some are prescribed medicated glasses without thorough eye examination. Though the clandestine ophthalmology centres in the economic capital are often clampdown by the regional ophthalmologist association, illegality is still the order of the day.  To savage the situation in Cameroon, the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services, CBCHS, reputed in the ophthalmology domain has invented and is producing four major eye drop types in their Mutengene Central Pharmacy in the South West Region. The General Manager of the pharmacy that has over 170 staff said they produce Timolol, Sodium Chromoglycate, Methylcellulose and Ciprofloxacin.
