T he 20 to 30 minutes of attendance time chopped off from a two-hour lec ture at the University of Buea, where paper attendance records were the norm, is now a thing of the past. Even the earlier workarounds that users exploited active radio-frequency identifi cation using radio waves, finger prints, and QR codes that were often photocopied and shared to other students or workers to mark their attendance are also laid to rest. A University of Buea student, Esimo Godwill Eyabi, of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, specialising in Com puter Engineering, has come up with a new attendance-recording solution in which the entire Uni versity of Buea student body can key in in under 15 seconds. It is called a Mobile-Based Attendance Management System using Geo fencing and Facial Recognition, he explained on October 13, 2026. The geofencing and facial reco gnition system already tested in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology saw five techniques in its buildup. The first is role-based access control for the different stakeholders: administrators, lec turers, and students. The second is Haversine geofencing, which confirms the location of a student. The third is integrating FaceNet facial recognition to confirm the identity of a student. The fourth is Firebase push notifications, so that an alert appears whenever a lecturer opens or closes a session. The fifth is evaluating the accuracy of the geofencing and the facial recognition. In registering into the system, Esimo Godwill solved the problem of a student’s exact location. The facial-recognition data is encrypted, and the system runs on a mobile device. He said GPS location alone can place a student but cannot confirm who that student is. Facial reco gnition such as FaceNet, on its own, can confirm identity but cannot establish location. The hybrid approach combining geo fencing with facial recognition was then designed to confirm both the location and the identity of a student at once, where ear li...
