A successful PhD defense by Ewane Cliford Ngabe on August 18, 2026, evaluated the effectiveness of the Growth and Employment Strategy Paper (GESP) in promoting socio-eco nomic growth and development in Cameroon. The thesis titled “Ca meroon’s National Development Strategies and Socio-Economic Challenges: An Evaluation of the Growth and Employment Strate gy Paper (GESP)” was defended before a six-man jury chaired by Prof. Abangwa James Arrey. In recent years, the government of Cameroon has been drafting and implementing strategic policies for the growth of the country. One of these strategic plans is the GESP, which was adopted to bring sustai nable solutions to the socio-economic challenges faced like high rates of poverty and unemployment, low infrastructure and human capital development. Despite the implementation of such strategic plan, Dr Ewane’s research showed that socio-eco nomic challenges saw an increase instead of an intended decrease. Poverty levels stayed the same, ge neral unemployment increased and infrastructural development remained poor. In addition, the findings of the research asserted that human capital development remained low. The candidate explained that vo cational education was meant to make students more of job creators than job seekers. Conversely, the implementation of this policy, which was estimated to create over 500 jobs from mainly skills and vocation, contrarily produced more job seekers than job creators.
