SCDP: Three Giant Projects to Boost Fuel Supply

The Minister of Mines inaugurated the company’s 4km pipeline, 1,000 MT Sphere, and a new Headquarters on August 21st in Douala.

T he Cameroon Petro leum Depots Company (SCDP) inaugurated three major projects on August 21st aimed at improving fuel storage and distribution in the country. The ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Water Resources and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, at the SCDP premises in Douala. Government authorities des cribed the projects as a major milestone achieved in the last 7 years, with great socio-eco nomic impact for the nation. Two of the three projects focus on operations. They are the second pipeline and a new gas sphere of 1,000 metric tonnes (MT), both aims to increase storage capacity and make the receiving and transfer of petroleum products easier. The second pipeline, which is 4km long, connects the Douala Port Authority directly to the Bessengue depot. This new line will secure the country’s fuel supply in the medium term. According to SCDP, the pipeline will double the capacity to receive petroleum products from vessels, make unloading safer, improve traf fic flow at the port, and limit demurrage charges paid by the State. Between 2018 and 2025, volumes received by vessels increased by nearly 60%. The number of vessels grew from an average of 8 per month in 2018 to 14 per month at press time. The second indispensable project, Sphere 6, built under strict safety standards, will store domestic cooking gas (LPG). With the new giant ball dubbed Sphere 6, the total gas storage capacity of the Bessengue site has moved from 2,500 MT to 3,500 MT. It is a 40% increase, which will reduce supply disruptions and ensure the availability of do mestic gas for households. Speaking during the ceremo ny, Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba announced that work will start on a third sphere before the end of the year. “Once completed, the total capacity will reach 5,500 MT, a move that answers the daily concerns of Cameroonian fa milies,” he said. The third project, which is SC DP’s new headquarters, is a three-f...
