Competitiveness of the Coffee Sector: What Role For The Private Sector ?

Things will never be the same again in the coffee sector as the private sector is now fully involved in surmounting the challenges in the sector. This follows a landmark International Coffee Agreement 2022 signed recently. The agreement brings together for the first time in 60 years, the biggest coffee retailers, roasters and manufacturers, alongside coffee farmers. The new agreement now brings a new impetus in the sector with the involvement of the private sector and the civil society who are now affiliate in key discussion and decision in the sustainability of the global coffee sector with 75 coffee producing and importing nations. In fact, the involvement of the private sector is intended to find new ways to improving conditions of the over USD 300 billion a year coffee sector which is a source of livelihood to millions of people from farmers to baristas across the world. The private sector is thus expected to make the coffee value chain more sustainable, inclusive and resilient to face numerous challenges confronting it. Challenges which includes unstable coffee prices, effects of climate change amongst others with many farmers abandoning plantations that has been their family source of income for generations. “We are entering a new era of cooperation with the private sector thanks to the landmark International Coffee Agreement 2022,” says Vanusia Nogueira, ICO Executive Director. “The arrival of the world’s biggest high-street names, manufacturers as well as smallholders means that the whole coffee value chain can now address the biggest challenges facing the global sector in a way that is fair for all,” she added. This therefore suggests that all hands are on deck to surmount challenges in the sector. Fighting extreme weather conditions like floods, droughts, frost and blights which results to crop losses, mobilizing financial resources to increase production and processing and commercialization of coffee in various value chains is now a general concern for all.
