This was revealed during an audience granted to the Managing Director of Olam International Limited on March 4, by the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana.
The improvement of local products by the State has been on the limelight for quite some time now, reason why the Ministry of Trade is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the feasibility of this initiative. To this effect, an audience was granted to V,Srivathan, Managing Director and CEO of Olam in Africa and the Middle East by Minister Luc Magloire M. Atangana. During their exchanges, they discussed on the development of the country’s agro industrial sector as well as Olam’s desire to increase investment in the area. Olam has steadily grown into an influential player within the Cameroon’s agri-business and food sectors with expanding investments across cocoa, coffee, grains and rice. According to the investors, the group has been operating in Cameroon for the past 24 years in the areas of cocoa, flour and importation of rice.
Having been into the coffee sector before, the Group’s Managing Director noted that, priority of Olam’s investment will be laid on the sectors they are currently into. “Over the last 7 years, we have outgrown our operation in Cameroon having visited the Ministry of Trade, we are very happy to hear the government’s vision for the agricultural sector. We are very entrenched into cocoa, flour and rice sectors and these are the areas we really like to expand our footprint” Srivathan elucidated. Going by Olam International Limited, their objective is to maintain direct interaction with small holder cocoa farmers to increase the number to 20.000 in the next couple of years. Believing in the country’s huge agricultural potential, they hope to look for other opportunities and certainly, other areas of investment. “We believe Cameroon has a huge potential, not only in cocoa but in other agricultural domains we would like to expand in areas we are currently into in the country. The vision of this mission is improving on local production, we really like to improve on the local content” he further noted. To the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire M. Atangana, the desire of the government is to see the improvement of homemade productions and the need to add more value to them. To him, producing a range of flour brands that serve bakeries and homes across the national triangle could be broadened by improving on other variety of flour production such as cassava and plantain flour.
