The price of cassava is hiking in Yaounde. This food crop which is one of the most consumed staples due to its multiple uses usually sells for FCFA 500 a heap now goes for FCFA 1000 per heap. According to retailers encountered at the Etoudi market, the price hikes are due to the fact that now is not the cassava season. A bag of cassava sells at FCFA 20,000 from FCFA 17,000 in the past months. Consequently, it has become difficult for consumers to find quality cassava due to its scarcity. The rising prices of cassava has also augmented the costs of its byproducts such as Garri. With the commencement of the rainy season producers say the price of the foodstuff will double as women grow less cassava during this period.
