Export sprang from 18 tons in 2015 to 212 tons in 2017
In local parlance others, is not only consumed in most parts of the country, but it is also exported to neighbouring countries and out of Africa. The vegetable fruit that is eaten in its raw and cooked form, has known significant increase in production and commercialisation. Coupled with the health benefits it possesses, the vegetable is becoming a large scale produce with ever increasing demand both at home and abroad. Before 2015, the crop was cultivated only for family consumption, suddenly farmers took it to the market and people began liking it while it also attracted foreign eyes, thus, exportation. Going by statistics from Littoral’s Regional Delegation of Agriculture compiled by the Phytosanitary Police Post at the Douala International Airport, exportation of eggplant stood at 18 tons in 2015 and just a year later, it skyrocketed to 61 tons meaning exportation increased by 43 tons. Due to the health benefits especially as it lessens the risk of diabetes and some heart diseases, the Regional Delegate, Jean Claude Konde said people became more interested, demand increased and more farmers went into its cultivation. In 2017, exportation tripled from 61 tons to 212 tons, which is telling of the future of garden egg business in Cameroon.
